21/Oct/2025 – Update on the International Chopin Piano Competition

It takes about 5 minute(s) to read this content.

This is Yuya Shimizu, Chief Investment Officer of Hibiki Path Advisors. Following my brief note on October 12 regarding Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (“KAWAI” or “the Company”), I would like to share an update on the company’s ongoing success at the 19th International Chopin Piano Competition.

Yesterday marked the end of the final round and judging, and on October 21 (Japan time), the winners of the 19th International Chopin Piano Competition were announced. Congratulations to Mr. Eric Lu, who distinguished himself among an incredibly competitive field to take first place, and to all the contestants and piano technicians who poured everything into this remarkable journey. Everyone who reached the final round is already a world-class artist with extraordinary technique and individuality — I’m genuinely excited to see how their careers will continue to flourish from here.

One of our portfolio companies, KAWAI, again demonstrated its global competitiveness. Just like in the previous 2021 competition, three contestants who chose Shigeru Kawai made it to the final round—and this time, all three ended up among the six prize winners. Out of the eight pianists who shared the 6th prize above, three played Steinway & Sons, three Shigeru Kawai, and two Fazioli. It’s a remarkable outcome that firmly places KAWAI alongside the world’s top piano makers.

As we reported previously, the share of contestants choosing Shigeru Kawai in the first round surged to 25% in this year’s competition, up significantly from 7% in the 18th competition. Among the final prize winners, three out of eight—equivalent to 37.5%—performed on Shigeru Kawai, demonstrating a strong and consistent presence throughout the event. Such an outstanding result at one of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions is bound to enhance KAWAI’s global recognition and brand value. While we hope KAWAI accelerates pursuit of its signature warm sound, we also look forward to the company capitalizing on this momentum in its marketing efforts to expand a global base of passionate KAWAI piano enthusiasts.
